Where’s My microSD Card? Check the Adapter First

One of the most common calls we get at The GPS Store comes from customers who just unboxed a new Chartplotter or Topo card and think the microSD card is missing.

Good news: it’s not missing at all. In almost every case, the microSD card is right where it’s supposed to be inside the SD adapter.

Why It Looks Like Something’s Missing

Many map and chart card brands including Garmin, Navionics, and more ship their microSD cards tucked into a standard SD adapter. This serves two key purposes:

  • Compatibility: Some devices accept full-size SD cards, while others use microSD. The adapter ensures you can use either.
  • Protection: Keeping the microSD inside the adapter prevents damage or loss during shipping and handling.

At a quick glance, it may look like you only received an adapter, but the smaller card is nested inside.

How to Find Your Card

When you open the box:

  1. Look for the larger SD adapter — this is the standard-sized card.
  2. Gently slide the microSD card out of the adapter slot.
  3. Insert the microSD card into your compatible Chartplotter, Fishfinder, or handheld device.

Final Tip

If you’re ever in doubt, always double-check the adapter before assuming the card is missing. Whether it’s Garmin, Navionics, or C-MAP, the microSD is almost always inside the adapter.

At The GPS Store, our goal is to make sure your gear works right out of the box—so you can spend less time troubleshooting and more time on the water, on the trail, or wherever your adventure takes you.
